A flower for hummingbirds. With over 100 wingbeats a second, hummingbirds require copious amount of nectar to sustain themselves. This makes them excellent pollinators as they will fly from flower to flower within a short space of time. This Passion vine and its relatives have vibrant red flowers, a colour which birds see better than insects and mammals. The petals are bent backwards so the hummingbird can access the nectar in the centre of the flower. The anthers with the pollen are positioned like a 'showerhead' above the flower waiting to be brushed by the head of the hummingbird.
