A wide-ranging fritillary. This is the most widespread fritillary in Wales. It can be found in open grassland areas and woodland edge. Individuals range far into the hills of mid Wales. Here they can be seen basking on the mountain top cairns in the summer evening sun. The dark-green is very similar to the much-rarer woodland butterfly, the high brown fritillary. The dark green lacks the red spots on the hind wing underside of the latter species and also has a bowed outer edge of the forewing (see above); the high brown has a concaveouter margin. This individual had accidentally become trapped in the corner of our back room in the butterfly house.
